In addition to addressing the extent and cause of the debacle in Afghanistan, the new German Government must urgently consider how to set a new course to prevent further destabilisation of the country. In their commentary, Conrad Schetter (BICC) and Bernhard Trautner (DIE) emphasise that the German government should strive for an approach to cooperation that is clearly shaped by civil society especially at local lever and extends beyond humanitarian assistance.
