IMPULSE Café: Protecting Genocide Survivors? Deportation and Reintegration Challenges of Iraqi Yazidis

Between 2014 and 2017, the Islamic State committed genocide against the Yazidi minority in Iraq and Syria, causing several hundreds of thousands to flee—many to Germany. Even after the territorial collapse of ISIS in Northern Iraq, survivors cannot safely return or rebuild their lives due to ongoing insecurity, legal uncertainty, limited political rights, and socio-economic hardship shaped by broader local and regional dynamics. In light of increasingly restrictive asylum policies, Germany and other European countries have, nonetheless, intensified efforts to return Yazidi refugees. This raises urgent questions about whether EU and German refugee law sufficiently protects genocide-affected groups and what realistic pathways for reintegration in Iraq exist.

The IMPULSE Cafés offer the opportunity to meet once a month to intensify the dialogue among researchers in the field of forced migration. We envision a pleasant yet intensive meeting where invited panelists, a moderator, and other participants will enjoy coffee together and discuss a central research topic. We cordially invite you to discuss theories and conceptual debates and to reflect on methodological or ethical challenges.
