HDP Nexus Application

The HDP Nexus Application is a digital platform designed to assist international, national and local organisations, particularly those operating in conflict-affected regions, to understand and operationalise the humanitarian–development–peace (HDP) nexus from a bottom-up perspective by including local voices. With its knowledge-sharing features, it aims to foster cross-learning and stronger coordination among various stakeholders to better address day-to-day challenges.

The application was developed as part of the project “How can the HDP Nexus Succeed? NGOs between Humanitarian Aid, Development Assistance and Peacebuilding”, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) (2021–2024). It was developed in collaboration with our partners—the International Rescue Committee, Welthungerhilfe and Malteser International—who tested earlier versions in the country offices in South Sudan and Mali, mainly, and provided feedback on them.

Key Features

The HDP Nexus Application is a progressive web application (PWA), which means it is designed to work efficiently across various devices and platforms using standard web technologies.

The application brings together a set of practical tools designed to make organisations’ work easier, improve teamwork and give them a clearer picture of the challenges they face. Designed to be user-friendly and available in multiple languages—English and French—, it ensures that teams can work together easily, no matter where they are based. Here is what it offers:

  • Enable institutional memory and efficient management. The application provides a centralised repository to organise, systematise and track projects and activities in detail, helping organisations avoid disruptions to continuity and strategy in highly volatile environments.

  • Promote integration between the HDP pillars. The application facilitates knowledge sharing within individual (I)NGOs and within consortia, thus promoting better-informed planning and implementation of activities. By increasing transparency and coordination, it helps to break down isolation between the HDP pillars and creates opportunities for cross-sectoral cooperation.

  • Incorporate local conflict analysis into project design and implementation. The application allows for in-depth, timely conflict analyses and integrates local perspectives and cultural contexts. This alignment helps ensure that activities meet the needs and realities of the communities that organisations serve, while allowing for timely strategic adjustments that can improve outcomes and avoid unintended consequences.

  • Geolocate your data. All data is geotagged and accessible via an interactive map. This feature provides organisations with a clearer understanding of who is working where and how and access to up-to-date information on conflict dynamics and recent developments.

  • Ensure the privacy of your information. The application ensures privacy by providing differentiated access based on user roles within an (I)NGO or consortium. Information entered into the application remains private by default and is only shared when explicitly intended.

Platform setup and inter-organisational coordination

Upon installation of the HDP Nexus Application, each organisation is tasked with independently setting up and managing its own instance of the platform. This process starts with an empty repository and a designated Admin account through which the organisation will create and manage user accounts as required.

For organisations wishing to work together as a consortium, direct coordination will be required as there is no automatic integration between separate instances of the platform. Each central organisation operates its own separate system, so if several organisations set up independent systems, these systems will not automatically communicate with each other. To facilitate data sharing and collaboration, the organisations must be part of the same operational sphere or consortium.

The application was developed primarily by Rolf Alberth and Rodrigo Bolaños Suárez at bicc (Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies). Esther Meininghaus, Birgit Kemmerling, Marie Müller-Koné, Boubacar Haidara, Jason Krämer and Lars Wirkus provided essential input in brainstorming the conceptualisation and design of the application. Special thanks go to Silvia Gaianigo for the design of the application’s logo and to Heike Webb for proofreading the texts.  We also thank our student assistants Ananya Pal and Le Khanh Hien Giang for their support.

Partner

We also recognize the support and feedback provided by our partners—the International Rescue Committee, Welthungerhilfe, and Malteser International—, which were instrumental in commenting on and testing earlier phases of the application.
