Integrated DDR Training Group (IDDRTG) \ 16th Annual General Meeting at BICC in Bonn

The 16th Annual General Meeting of the Integrated Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Training Group (IDDRTG) was hosted by BICC on 25 February 2020. The meeting, which was co-chaired by the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) and BICC, was followed by an expert meeting on training methodology from 26 to 27 February.

A total of 15 different organisations participated in both events, including old and new members of the IDDRTG as well as organisations with an observer role to the IDDRTG, such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Department of Peace Operations (DPO), the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU).
The Integrated DDR Training Group (IDDRTG) was launched in 2006 to build and strengthen DDR training across the globe. Since the United Nations Integrated DDR Standards (IDDRS) were partly revised in 2019 and are currently still under revision, the members of the IDDRTG discussed implications of this revision for DDR training during the Annual Meeting. BICC has been supporting the revision process of the IDDRS since 2018 in the context of a project funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. The Annual Meeting also provided the opportunity for thematic exchange and discussion of future cooperation initiatives between old and new IDDRTG members and the organisations in observing roles.
The objective of the Experts’ Meeting that followed the Annual Meeting was to reflect upon training methodologies used in DDR training to identify training needs as well as essential elements of DDR training in the face of the substantial IDDRS revision process. As a meeting result, the IDDRTG will agree on joint principles that guide DDR training of its member institutions. BICC will make use of these new guidelines to implement three Train-the-Trainer courses in 2020, which are aimed at disseminating the revised IDDRS and which will be conducted in close collaboration with other IDDRTG members.
