Local Perspectives on the HDP Nexus

Findings and recommendations of the bicc-project “How can the HDP nexus succeed? NGOs between humanitarian aid, development assistance and peacebuilding”

Against the backdrop of rising humanitarian needs and international funding cuts, the HDP (humanitarian–development–peace) nexus is a policy and practice to better link humanitarian assistance, development cooperation and peacebuilding activities to provide sustainable solutions for conflict-affected contexts and protracted crises.

While borne of good intention, the implementation of the HDP nexus approach has largely remained a top-down process, drawing on concepts of conflict, conflict resolution and peace that do not reflect local realities where projects are implemented. The question then arises: How does the HDP nexus contribute to building peace in local communities?

To address this question, this project investigated the experiences and perspectives of local communities and NGOs working across the HDP pillars in Iraq, South Sudan and Mali. The aim of the project was to understand local perspectives on conflict dynamics, resolution practices, and visions of peace, while exploring how these factors influence—and are influenced by—the HDP Nexus in practice.

The event highlights the project´s outcomes, key findings and lessons learned and provides a space for fruitful discussions.
It will be held in English with translation into French and Arabic.
