Syria after Regime Collapse
Transition without Consolidation
Following the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024, expectations of a transition toward peace and recovery in Syria increased significantly. One year on, however, Syria’s trajectory points less toward consolidation than toward a fragmented and uncertain transition. Persistent insecurity, contested authority, uneven international engagement, stalled security sector reform and exclusionary reconstruction practices continue to shape political, economic and social realities.
Against this backdrop, the workshop brings together a small group of experts and stakeholders for an in-depth and focused exchange. The discussion will centre on three interconnected thematic dimensions:
- political and security developments
- economic conditions and international engagement
- reconstruction and return dynamics
The workshop is designed to prioritise analytical discussion over formal presentations and to facilitate critical reflection on key dilemmas, trade-offs and implications for future policy and engagement. In each session, up to two invited participants will offer brief framing inputs to initiate the discussion, which will then unfold as an open and interactive exchange involving all participants, with the aim of fostering a substantive and productive debate. Discussions will take place under Chatham House Rules.
