Violent Extremism and Transgenerational Resilience in Mindanao

Mindanao has long been shaped by violent extremism, historical struggles, and cycles of armed conflict, leaving deep imprints on families and communities. For generations, its people have endured colonisation, displacement and political exclusion, contributing to long-standing grievances that continue to fuel tensions today. Yet, amid these challenges, resilience is passed down through generations—through cultural practices, kinship networks and grassroots peace efforts.
This event examines how violent extremism and transgenerational resilience intersect in Mindanao. It explores how historical memory, trauma and lived experiences shape not only pathways to radicalisation but also resistance against violence. Drawing on community perspectives from Mindanao, it highlights the ways families and local actors navigate the effects of conflict while fostering healing, adaptation and peacebuilding.
