In this article, I will unpack nine popular narratives that the media and policy think tanks have conveyed to international public and policymakers about the Afghan Taliban and critically discuss their adequacy. By analysing available scholarly resources on the Taliban movement and members’ self-perception, it is my intention to invigorate a rethink in the mainstream perception and popular images of the Taliban’s origin, conduct and objectives. On that basis, the outlook points to possible pathways of dealing with the new rulers in Kabul.
