Iran is under the suspicion of wanting to manufacture nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian nuclear program. So far, there is no clear proof of an active Iranian nuclear weapons program, and Iran is adamant in denying that it wants nuclear weapons.
The current uranium enrichment activities in Iran take place under the control of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). They do not contradict the regulations of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, which aims at preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons but allows the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Still, in 2006 IAEA as well as the UN Security Council, demanded the immediate suspension of Iran’s nuclear enrichment activities as the only means of restoring trust. This demand was rejected by the Iranian leadership. An escalation of the dispute seemed inevitable.
