Transnational Lives and Experiences of Crimean Tatars after Russia’s Annexation of Crimea

Crimean Tatars—having endured repeated forced migrations—have established a significant diaspora, primarily across Eastern Europe and Turkey. The annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 sparked yet another wave of displacement, compelling many Crimean Tatars to seek refuge in Ukrainian government-controlled territory or join existing diaspora communities, particularly in Turkey. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Crimean Tatars once again faced displacement. Today, while Turkey remains host to the largest Crimean Tatar community, significant populations also reside in Poland, Germany, Ireland and Canada. For Crimean Tatars scattered across Europe, the challenges of maintaining connections within their community, advocating for Crimea’s return under Ukrainian sovereignty and preserving their rich cultural heritage have evolved into a transnational endeavour.

The event is organised as an interactive workshop combining short, focused inputs with extended plenary discussion. The format is designed to foster exchange across perspectives and to actively involve all participants.
