Almost 30 years of armed struggle between the Government of Indonesia (Gol) and the Free Aceh Movement/Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (GAM) in the North-Western province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) were put to an end with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 15 August 2005 in Helsinki. A year later, a BICC project funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs examined the first results of the peace process. The outcome was an analysis of the process of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DD&R) which is intended to form the basis for recommendations on planning future crisis management missions and DD&R programs.
