Kick-off ceremony \ Innovation Campus Bonn presented itself
Bonn is developing into an international centre for sustainability research—this was the stimulus given by the opening event of the Innovation Campus Bonn (ICB). The Campus is to give research on this forward-looking topic a concrete location in the federal city. The ICB is initiated by the Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research, which brings together six universities and scientific institutions.
On Tuesday, 25 June 2019, the experts of the Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research discussed issues of global change and opportunities for sustainable development in a panel discussion and presented the ICB to the public for the first time. State Secretary Annette Storsberg from the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia, Petra Berkner from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Mayor of Bonn, as well as the scientific director of the Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research/ Innovation Campus (ICB), Professor Dr Jakob Rhyner, welcomed the 160 invited guests.
The Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research was founded at the Bonn World Climate Conference COP23 in autumn 2017. The signatory institutions include the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC), the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS), the Institute for Environment and Human Security of the United Nations University (UNU-EHS) and the University of Bonn with its Center for Development Research (ZEF). The Bonn Alliance’s aim is to pool the competencies available in Bonn for sustainable development even more.
With the Innovation Campus Bonn, the six alliance members want to create an open platform for working towards a sustainable future and give everyone a basis for contributing ideas, expertise and outlooks on the subject of sustainability. Initially, the three research areas" Digitization and Artificial Intelligence", " Mobility and Migration" and " Bioeconomics" are planned to be addressed.
The Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia is supporting the establishment of the ICB with 1.35 million euros.
