Regional training of trainers on Physical Security and Stockpile Management (PSSM)

In partnership with the Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA), the Multinational Small Arms and Ammunition Group (MSAG), the British Peace Support Team (BPST), the Kingdom of Denmark, and the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC), BICC conducted a regional training on Physical Security and Stockpile Management (PSSM) of weapons, ammunition and explosives from 15-19 March 2021 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Despite strict Covid-19 health protocols, 19 participants, tasked with weapons and ammunition management in the armed forces (police and military) as well as wildlife services in eight East African countries, successfully attended the course. Through theoretical and practical exercises the training builds on existing weapons and ammunition management expertise of participants and instructors in complex, limited-resource and often conflict-affected contexts. It equips them with in-depth knowledge of international guidance and best practice including the UN ammunition and small arms control guidelines (IATGs and MOSAIC). As part of a long-term training of trainers approach that aims at building a regional pool of PSSM instructors, this March again, instructor candidates qualified as PSSM instructors and can now be deployed as such in the RECSA region and beyond. Additionally, three participants were selected and have now the opportunity to become instructor candidates themselves.
