Obituary notice on Peter J. Croll, former director of BICC
On 6 January 2019, former BICC director Peter J. Croll passed away.
“The aim of the analyses, advice and applied research projects at BICC is to contribute to a more peaceful and fairer world in which all people have a high level of safety”.
This is how Peter J. Croll described BICC’s vision in his speech marking the 10th anniversary of BICC on 2 April 2004 at the Haus der Geschichte in Bonn.
Peter J. Croll was director of our Center from 2002 to 2012 and passed away on 6 January 2019. We are deeply saddened about this news and remain faithful to the vision laid out by Peter J. Croll to this day.
Peter J. Croll, an experienced cosmopolitan and highly committed to BICC’s work, wrote an important chapter of our history. It was a chapter of advancement and of widening the traditional areas of work at BICC. In all this, Peter J. Croll always strove to foster peace, safety and security as well as development by combining applied research, advice and training. This spirit continues to inspire our work to this day.
He succeeded in leading BICC at a time of institutional transition, when BICC expanded its thematic coverage. This allowed us to build up BICC’s reputation so that today, our expertise in research and advice is recognized, valued and sought after nationally and internationally.
During a period when public finances were stretched, Peter J. Croll stood for a healthy and sustainable path of consolidation. This allowed BIC to make provisions for difficult times; another credit to his name.
In brief: “He has literally put BICC on the world map“. This is Carlos Lopes, former Head of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa’s commendation of Peter J. Croll’s work at BICC on the occasion of his official retirement on 3 May 2012 at the Museum König in Bonn.
We are deeply thankful for all that he achieved for BICC, and his contribution will not be forgotten.
We would also like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family.
