On 28 March 2023, the Johannes-Rau-Forschungsgemeinschaft (JRF) hosted the event 'Cohesion in Migration Societies' in Düsseldorf (in German) to discuss how social cohesion can succeed against the background of an increasing diversity in European migration societies.

Within the framework of 'Globalisation and Integration', one of the four leitmotifs established by the JRF, the event aimed to look at how transnational dependencies, access to resources and international frameworks challenge and contribute to integration in European migration societies.

To shed light on the interrelationship between globalisation and integration from different perspectives, the event featured expert presentations from members of the JRF research institutes 'Stiftung Zentrum für Türkeistudien und Integrationsforschung (ZfTI)', 'Institut für Landes- und Stadtentwicklungsforschung (ILS)', 'German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS)' and BICC, which illuminate the topic from different perspectives.

Ruth Vollmer, researcher at BICC, presented on social cohesion in the context of migration and return, drawing on examples from Kosovo and Albania. In particular, she addressed the aspect that migration increasingly involves multidirectional and circular movements and connects people and places in transnational spaces. This requires new reflections on meanings and possibilities of social cohesion.
