Online video \ United Nations in times of geopolitical change
The world today is a very different place from the time when the United Nations was founded. What are the most pressing challenges facing the UN? Angela Kane, former UN Representative on Disarmament, and Andreas Künne, Federal Foreign Office, discussed this with other experts on 1 March 2021 at the invitation of BICC, DIE, DGVN and SDSN-Germany. The social and economic consequences of the COVID 19 pandemic threaten social cohesion and previous development trajectories in many places, in poorer and richer countries alike. Climate change is accelerating and has global impacts. Poverty and growing inequalities, forced displacement and war continue to be part of the bitter reality of life for many people. Such global challenges make multilateral cooperation seem more urgent than ever. Yet nationalist and populist governments around the world are challenging this view. This is compounded by power struggles and disagreements among UN member states, which delay or even prevent decisive action from addressing many of the world's problems. But the institutional inadequacies of the UN itself also cloud the picture.
