The social and economic consequences of the COVID 19 pandemic threaten social cohesion and previous development trajectories in many places, in poorer and richer countries alike. Climate change is accelerating and has global impacts. Poverty and growing inequalities, forced displacement and war continue to be part of the bitter reality of life for many people. Such global challenges make multilateral cooperation seem more urgent than ever. Yet nationalist and populist governments around the world are challenging this view.
