Commentary \ Why is Turkey's Erdogan Rushing to Recalibrate with Syria Ahead of the Elections?
Efforts to recalibrate Turkey–Syria relations are back in the headlines, albeit overshadowed by the devastating earthquakes and the upcoming elections on Sunday 14 May in Turkey.
In their commentary, Zeynep Sahin-Mencütek and Osman Bahadir Dincer argue that the recent electoral period has elevated the repatriation issue to the centre of domestic politics and further instrumentalised Syrian refugees by the ruling party and the opposition. The authors warn that instrumentalising refugees in this way increases the risk of human rights violations and becomes an essential resource for internal and regional political power struggles. Considering the political polarisation and rise of populist discourse in Turkey, Sahin-Mencütek and Dincer are concerned about the potential impact on the country’s political stability.
