Research Profile


Joseph's main research interests include Political Economy, Political Islam, Contemporary history of the Middle East, Sectarianism, Neoliberalism, Development. His analytical approach draws on a wide range of academic writing in the fields of political economy, political science, history and development. His frequent visits to the region in the context of academic conferences, training activities and research also contribute to enriching it. Joseph's basic theoretical framework is based on an analysis of the political economy of the Middle East.

Professional Career

Joseph completed a first PhD thesis in Development Studies at the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in 2015, entitled "Hezbollah: a Historical Materialist Analysis" and then another doctoral thesis in May 2018 at the University of Lausanne, entitled: "Revolution and Counter Revolutions in Syria, Origins and Developments".
His recognised expertise on the Middle East led him to write numerous articles for academic journals and for various research centers and academic websites in English, French and Arabic.
Since November 2018, Joseph has been an invited professor at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence. At the EUI, he first participated in the research project entitled "Wartime and post-conflict in Syria project" between November 2018 and July 2022. Since September 2022, he has been co-managing the “Syrian Trajectories: Challenges and opportunities for peacebuilding” project at the EUI, which builds on the previous project “Wartime and post-conflict in Syria project”. Joseph has published numerous papers as part of these two projects.
He has also worked for various UN Agencies, NGOs and research centers in consulting and expert mandates to conduct programs and research for them. Besides his research, he has also accumulated with great pleasure his experience of academic teaching. Since September 2017, Joseph has been teaching at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (SSP) of the University of Lausanne. Previously, as of September 2012, he held the position of graduate assistant within the same Faculty. His years of teaching have allowed him to develop valuable skills in this area that he has been able to use both for ex-cathedra courses and seminars to the public
