Professional Career
Before joining bicc in 2019, Maarit managed the Global Nexus Secretariat at GIZ (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), a global hub for an EU co-funded programme on the Water–Energy–Food Security (WEF) Nexus from 2015-2019. Prior to her assignment GIZ, she worked in Namibia for the GIZ Land Reform Programme as an integrated expert for the Legal Assistance Centre LAC (from 2011-2024). In LAC she implemented a research project that analysed the living conditions of the San in Namibia 20 years after Independence. She further conducted a study examining the communal land reform in Namibia with a specific focus on the land rights regitstration process. From 1999-2008 Maarit worked for as Project Officer for the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP) at the United Nations University.In this function she was the Liaison officer for a range of different projects )amongst others "Global Environmental Change and Food Security Programme - GECAFS", Global Environmental Change and Human Security Programme - GECHS", "Global Environmental Change and Urbanisation Programme - UGEC" and acted as Focal point for the organisation of the IHDP summer schools and Open Meetings of the Human Dimensions Research Community.
